Today I am thrilled to announce that Dr. Paul B. Rothman, former Dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and former CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine, and Dr. Andrew Trister, Deputy Director, Digital Health and Innovation at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, have joined System as our first healthcare advisors. Dr. Rothman and Dr. Trister bring deep medical and healthcare expertise that will help guide System as we work to evolve healthcare from silos to systems and deliver trusted AI-based solutions for clinicians and researchers.
Dr. Paul B. Rothman served as Dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine for a decade until his retirement in 2022. In these roles, Dr. Rothman oversaw a $9 billion global health enterprise and a world leader in innovative research, medicine and education. Dr. Rothman steered Johns Hopkins Medicine to pioneer the use of data to advance research, clinical care, and education, leading to the institution’s support of dozens of precision medicine centers of excellence that use large amounts of data to better understand how diseases including Alzheimer's, cystic fibrosis, and prostate cancer vary by individual and how treatments can be tailored to specific patients. A respected physician-scientist in rheumatology and molecular immunology, Dr. Rothman is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He has served as president of the Association of American Physicians and the Society of Medical Administrators, and was elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences. Dr. Rothman sits on the boards of Merck and Labcorp. He graduated from MIT and earned his M.D. from Yale.
Dr. Andrew Trister is Deputy Director, Digital Health and Innovation, at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His team focuses on solutions that enable high quality healthcare at the frontline of care delivery in the home and in the community in low resource settings. Dr. Trister previously led clinical research and machine learning efforts in health special projects at Apple. Prior to Apple, he was the senior physician at Sage Bionetworks, where he focused on incentives for researchers and participants to collaborate on large datasets and translating those findings to clinical settings. Dr. Trister is a physician-scientist passionate about leveraging technology to improve health care for all. He completed his residency in radiation oncology at the University of Washington, earned an M.D., Ph.D. in bioengineering, MSE and BSE in computer science, and a B.A. in biological basis of behavior all from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Rothman and Dr. Trister join System following our recent launch of System Pro, an AI-powered search engine for research built with explainability and trustworthiness at its core, and initially targeted at clinicians and biomedical researchers.
I could not be more excited that they have agreed to share their unique insight and experience with us at this transformative moment.
